This distinct delicacy hails from Portugal and is often referred to as Portuguese cabbage or sea kale. Its wavy green leaves boast a flavor and texture reminiscent of collard greens. The sturdy, thick midribs and stems can be peeled just like celery or tossed into the soup for added depth. These robust plants can reach heights of up to 2 feet and spread out to 2 feet wide. Cultivate them similarly to standard kale, ensuring that plants are spaced 18–36 inches apart to allow for optimal growth. Beira is only able to withstand light frosts and thrives best when harvested in spring or fall, as it is prone to tip burn during hotter conditions.
