Early maturing purple annual.

This is a specially developed early artichoke for annual cultivation from seed. The plants, ranging in height from 1 to 3 feet, can grow upright or sprawling, yet they all yield abundant harvests of buds that transition from purple to greenish-purple. Typically, there are 1 to 3 main buds measuring between 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 inches in diameter, accompanied by an additional 5 to 7 smaller secondary buds with sizes from 2 to 2 1/2 inches across. This variety was created by Keith Mayberry, who also bred the Imperial Star. These plants feature spiny foliage. They are considered perennial in Zone 7 and regions with warmer climates; otherwise, they should be grown as an annual. NOTE: The degree of purpling may differ among individual plants; some will have completely purple buds while others may display only purple-tinged bracts.
