This unique Chinese vegetable, commonly referred to as Kailaan, yields an abundance of slender, pencil-like flower stems that are red-purple in color when young. Its delightful and gentle mustard flavor makes it ideal for enjoying fresh in salads or lightly sautéed in stir-fries and soups. This plant is perfect for multiple harvests of its tender leaves and stems. While it can be sown in spring, optimal results are achieved when planted between June and October, offering a harvest period from mid-summer to winter (in warmer regions). Harvest the 8–10" long shoots by snapping them off; those that resist breaking are considered too mature.
