The hue of the night sky.

Attractive, deep purple kernels brimming with remarkable healing properties come from a stunning corn variety that withstands drought and matures early, even in northern climates. Driven by a vision, dedicated corn breeder Dave Christensen has invested over 30 years creating a strain with the utmost antioxidant levels. A Navajo elder once told Dave that black kernels serve "for healing," prompting him to choose the darkest kernels from grain corn cultivated in Montana and its neighboring states. In one particular year, Dave collaborated with organic farmer Ole Norgaard to cultivate 10 acres solely for the purpose of selecting plants with the most intensely colored kernels! Originating from Dave's earlier corn variety, Painted Mountain, Montana Morado Maize’s lineage has thrived in Montana's challenging climate for centuries. They have survived short growing seasons, chilly springs and falls, as well as summer drought conditions. The seeds of this resilient corn are produced organically in Montana itself. It produces exceptional cornbread due to its unique soft-flour starch that mills effortlessly. You can boil it to create pozole or polenta—the culinary possibilities are infinite! Translated loosely, "Montana Morado Maize" signifies "purple corn hailing from Montana." It's indeed a rare delight to find such an exquisite anthocyanin-rich variety suited for such northern latitudes. The plants typically reach heights of 5–6 feet and yield long, slender ears measuring 8–10 inches. Certified Organic by USDA.
