Yields 6–8 oz. slicers that are excellent for fresh consumption and highly sought after for canning, especially suited for stewed tomatoes. This enduring favorite was developed by the University of Wisconsin, Madison in the 1940s. Although various strains of Wisconsin 55 exist today, their quality has diminished over time. Therefore, Organic-Seed pinpointed this particular strain, which exhibits more uniform sizing, healthier growth, and fewer fruit imperfections compared to other commercially available Wisconsin 55 variations. We also believe our version is truer to the original cultivar. We obtained it from plant geneticist Ted Bingham at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, who had preserved Wisconsin 55 seeds from the 1960s in a frozen state.
